New Internet Connectivity Through Wireless DSL
Wireless DSL is an alternative form of ADSL broadband that is finding its way onto the market. Unlike the fixed line counterparts, wireless DSL does not require the maintenance of a conventional phone line. This service is available in selected areas of the US and is finding its way onto the market in other regions of the world. The term DSL refers to a data service delivered over standard copper telephone lines. Terrestrial wireless technologies is based on local transceivers with a relatively short range. The services are similar to cellular data and only available to those with a direct line of sight to a transceiver. In the US the service is provided through ISP's and available in areas such as Santa Rosa, California, Stockton, Atlanta, Georgia and San Fanscisco. In Australia, DSL wireless internet, termed 'naked DSL plans' is set to launch in the later half of 2007 through companies such as Iinet, TPG, Internode and Engin. Although the cost of access exceeds that of standard DSL acess, customers can forego paying the traditional amount associated with line rental fees. An advantage and potential saving associated with wireless DSL connections is the potential cost savings that can manifest from bundled service plans that take advantage of voice over the internet protocols. Additionally, many people that have mobile phones use the mobile phone to access the internet and do not require a fixed phone line. The flexibility provided by wireless DSL providers allows them to buy a broadband connection without having to buy a telephone connection. With conventional DSL, each subscriber has a dedicated connection. The service for wireless DSL is a shared connection similar to the setup provided by cable connections. Therefore, end users can be subject to slow down periods during high use periods if capacity levels are oversubscribed. On the whole, wireless DSL service is comparative to a typical DSL service provider with download speeds of 1.5 mbps and upload speeds of 128 kbps. The security used by wireless DSL services such as Broadlink is based on the WEP (wired equivalent privacy) standard. Latency is also comparable to cable internet or DSL which is slightly better than a satellite connection. You can use the Broadlink service with either a static IP, bridged or routed with full server capability. End users can expect to see additional developments in the Wireless DSL spectrum in the years to come in response to new technological developments and the evolution of service providers. |
