ISDN V DSL
ISDN internet access is a service somewhat similar to DSL but with some distinctly different characteristics. Similar in functionality to DSL, ISDN internet provides the capacity to bring multimedia such as data, voice and video to your business. The difference between an ISDN internet connection and DSL lies in the speed. ISDN is slightly faster than 56K transmission providing transmission rates from between 128 kbps to 384kbps but slower than DSL that delivers rates from 128 kbps to 8mbps. ISDN DSL is a technology that has been around since the 1980's so DSL is considered to have surpassed ISDN lines. Unlike DSL which is a service that is always on, ISDN is a dial up service that can be used to provide a business with voice, data and video capability. The superior speed that is provided by DSL services is the primary reason that it is superior to the ISDN offering. Both ISDN internet connections and DSL services require the premises to be located within 18,000 feet from the service provider. Proximity is one of the factors that will ultimately determine the speed of your connection. The quality of the copper wires is also a factor that determines the speed of DSL connections. ISDN connections are not an ideal choice for transmissions that require packet connections to the internet. Packet data allows for data that is lost to be resent and is ideal for streaming broadcast media. ISDN connections therefore do not support the Zephyr codec which is a requirement for a continuous uninterrupted stream of data that accompanies real time feeds. In general, ISDN connection do not require wiring upgrades but some DSL connections may require new wire depending on the type of DSL. ISDN DSL also does not require a modem. If you intend to use ISDN for internet transmission of data and video, you will need a terminal adapter to hookup your personal computer. For network sharing over a dedicated line, you will need to have an ISDN router installed. Cost considerations for both technologies can depend on usage and the type of service required. ISDN is a premium service and cost will depend on your usage. The setup cost of installation will also need to be factored in. DSL is very affordable and is often based upon a flat rate. You will need to determine whether SDSL or ADSL is more suitable for your requirements. An SDSL service uses upstream and downstream capacity to carry data in both directions. ADSL offers a higher downstream capacity than upstream. Therefore, if you are a heavy downloader ADSL may be more suitable but if you deliver large files, you may want to consider SDSL. |
