DSL is otherwise referred to as digital subscriber line. This technology makes use of the copper telephone lines to provide a transmission mechanism for delivery of the internet service. Having a telephone connection, however, does not necessarily mean you can access DSL broadband internet. In general, the closer you are to the service center and the higher the quality of your line, the better your access speeds will be. If your connection extends more than a predetermined radius, you are likely to experience connection speeds at the lower end of the spectrum. IDLS, however, uses a form of integrated ISDN technology to boost transmission signals that exceed the required distance. This allows the subscriber to enjoy a DSL service but at a reduced speed.

The usual course of action to setup a DSL account is to fill in an online inquiry with the service provider or make a phone call to the sales department. The company needs to be able to assess whether the address can support DSL transmission. If you are close enough to the service center a line test is run to determine if your copper wires can handle the bandwidth needed to support the service. IDSL is generally used when ADSL or SDSL is unavailable due to distance limitations. In such cases speed is limited to the lower end of the spectrum.

Prices for DSL services vary depending on the service provider. DSL high speed internet tends to cost more. There are many DSL internet deals available on the internet but your choice of service will ultimately depend on the location and the available service. The service provider can usually assist with any hardware requirements. Pricing schedules usually involve an installation fee, equipment fee and monthly service charge. In some cases, the installation fee may be waived and the equipment subsidized depending on the length of the contract agreement. This is similar to a mobile phone deal where you get the free phone if you enter into an 18 or 24 month agreement.
