What Is A DSL Filter And Why You Need It
If you have ever tried to run a DSL connection and a phone line simultaneously without a DSL filter, you would soon discover why these handy little devices are so important. After you've experienced a high degree of static during a phone conversation that makes the entire call frustrating and unpleasant, or been repeatedly knocked off the internet in the middle of some important work and not been able to explain why, a missing DSL line filter can be the answer to your prayers. If you ever had an open connection without a DSL filter, you'll soon discover this trusty little device fulfills a very useful purpose that is often overlooked when you initially install your connection. In short, a DSL filter filters out the line interference when the broadband and phone line share the same connection. Usually when you sign up with your broadband provider, they will provide a DSL phone line filter together with the router. During installation, the filter is plugged directly into the main phone socket and the phone and modem are both connected. It is easy to overlook the importance of the DSL telephone filter because it actually just looks like a small connection device that connects both the phone and modem to the line socket. In technical terms there are actually two types of DSL filters. The split method is a way to filter internet access by installing a splitter in the main telephone cable. The splitter creates two lines. One to service the phone connection and another that connects the modem. This setup eliminates the need for a DSL connection but requires a technician to visit the premises and is therefore more costly to implement. Other devices my require the use of a DSL filter such as fax machines, voice band modems and the telephone leaving the DSL modem free from filtering. Basically, the filter strips away the noise that would otherwise cause disturbance to the operation of these devices. DSL filters can be purchased from local electronics or computer shops. The internet is a great place to do research and to compare the options. Not all DSL filters are the same so going for a good quality selection is worthwhile to prevent the unnecessary noise that can interfere with your connection. You can even make a purchase online and have the order sent out via post. Unless the DSL filter is an urgent requirement, buying online can be a great way to save time. |
