Dsl Connection Speed - Explained And Examined
With the Internet becoming a virtual second home for pretty much everyone these days, it's important to make sure that your computer and connection is allowing you to use the web to its full potential. This is where having a dedicated DSL line is more beneficial, and the better your DSL connection speed, the better your overall web experience. So, what is DSL and why is your DSL internet connection speed so important? DSL Explained Simply put, DSL is an extremely high-speed connection that uses the same technology as your home telephone. Standing for Digital Subscriber Line, it offers a far quicker upload and download speed than a normal modem would. This means that if you're using your computer to download music or movies, or even if you're uploading movie clips to something like Youtube, you can do it a lot faster than a standard dial-up connection modem would allow you to. Some of the benefits that a DSL connection offers you is being able to use your phone at the same time as being online; no rewiring necessary; and higher speed access. There are some downsides to the service, in that it downloads faster than it uploads and not every area has it, but apart from that, it's the preferred choice for many Internet users. Why your DSL Connection Speed is so Important Since DSL is a digital connection, it's important to ensure that it's running at its optimized capacity. Not only will this allow your computer to surf online a lot quicker, it will also ensure that when a telephone call comes in, it doesn't impede the speed of your online connection either. How to detect your DSL Connection Speed To be able to optimize your DSL connection, first you need to know what speed your modem is running at. Obviously, the higher the information rate, the better connection and service you'll get. The best way to do this is to run a diagnostic test online, which will compare your connection speed to what it should be. You can easily go to Google and type in DSL Connection Speed test, and you'll receive a whole host of companies and sites that will run an instant test on your modem and connection. Companies like Tiscali and DSLReports.com offer both tests and solutions. Improving your DSL Connection Speed Once you've had a test, the results will show your internet connection speed. Of course, it's all dependent on what service you have with your Internet provider - for example, it may be that you have a 2.0MB package, which means you have an excellent download speed, compared to someone who uses a 1.0MB package. It's very rare that you'll be using this amount completely, though. As a guide, a good average speed that's constant is 1.5MB. Although this falls short of dedicated cable modems and other high-end connections, it's still a good alternative for many homes. If you are using DSL and you're unhappy with the speed, you can always purchase software that will increase the rate for you. Companies such as DSL Speed.org offer a 30-day trial of their software, and should this be what you're after, you can purchase it outright for only $24.95 USD. |
